Foraging Walks

Do I need experience to join a foraging walk?

No experience needed. Most of my walks are designed for complete beginners, and I teach all plant identification and safety skills from scratch. If you’ve foraged before and want to go deeper, you’re just as welcome.

What will I learn on a foraging walk?

You’ll learn to identify 15-20 wild edible plants (30+ on full-day walks), how to tell them apart from toxic look-alikes, and how to harvest them ethically and sustainably. We also cover seasonal knowledge and basic wild food preparation, so you leave with skills you can use again on your own.

How long do foraging walks last?

Half-day walks run around 3-4 hours; full-day walks run 6-8 hours and include a wild food lunch. Exact times are listed on each event page.

What should I bring to a foraging walk?

Sturdy, waterproof footwear (wellies or hiking boots work well), weather-appropriate layers, and a waterproof jacket, because Cumbria’s weather changes quickly. Bring a water bottle too, and a basket or bag if you’d like to bring anything home; I’ll give guidance on that during the walk.

Where do the walks take place?

Walks take place across Cumbria’s woodlands and coastline, as well as locations in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Each event listing gives the exact meeting point, terrain, and what to expect on the day.

Are foraging walks safe for beginners?

Yes. Safety is my priority: you’ll learn a robust identification method for every plant, understand which look-alikes to avoid, and I’m with you throughout to check anything you’re unsure about. As a member of the Association of Foragers, I follow professional standards for safe, ethical foraging.

What’s the difference between half-day and full-day walks?

Half-day walks (3-4 hours) focus on one terrain and around 15-20 plants, a great introduction if you’re short on time. Full-day walks (6-8 hours) cover two terrain types, 30+ plants, and include a wild food lunch, for a deeper, more immersive session.

Can children come?

Many events welcome children, and each listing gives its own age guidance. Under-18s need to come with an adult.

What if I have allergies or dietary restrictions?

Let us know on your Health & Consent Form when you book, so I can advise you properly on the day. Any tasting of foraged food is always optional, and I’ll flag anything relevant to your allergies as we go.

Herbal Remedy Workshops

Do I need herbal experience to take a herbal remedy workshop?

No experience necessary. My herbal remedy workshops are designed as an accessible introduction. I teach every technique from scratch, whether it’s your first tincture or your fifth.

What will I make in a herbal remedy workshop?

It depends on the workshop: your own herbal tea blend, syrup, balm or tincture, which you take home the same day. Each event page tells you exactly what you’ll be making.

Can I use the remedies on my family?

The remedies are yours to use as you see fit, and many people do make them for family use. That said, the workshops are educational rather than medical advice, so always check with a qualified healthcare professional before giving a herbal remedy to children, or if anyone taking it is pregnant, breastfeeding, or on medication.

Are herbal remedies safe?

“Natural” doesn’t mean risk-free, and any herbal preparation can affect people differently. In every workshop I cover which herbs to avoid and when, and how much to use. What I share is educational, not medical advice, so please check with a healthcare professional before using any herbal remedy, especially if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a health condition.

What materials do I need to bring?

Just yourself. All plant materials, equipment, and containers are provided, so there’s nothing you need to bring beyond curiosity (a notebook if you’d like one, though it isn’t required).

How long do homemade remedies last?

It depends what you make: tinctures typically keep for 3-5 years, balms for 1-2 years, syrups for 6-12 months refrigerated, and dried herbal tea blends for around a year. I cover proper storage and labelling in the workshop so yours lasts as long as possible.

Booking and practical questions

How do I book a course?

You can book directly through the events page, or email info@wildandweeds.co.uk. You’ll get a payment receipt straight away, and your event details and what to bring before the day.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Plans change, so we have a tiered refund policy based on how much notice you give us before the event: the more notice, the more you get back. Full details, including how to cancel or transfer your booking, are on our Cancellation and Refund Policy page.

Can I book a private group?

Yes. Private group bookings are available. Group size depends on the event and what you’re after, from small celebrations to larger corporate or educational groups, and I also run the Ultimate Wild Retreat as a bespoke one-to-one or couples’ experience. Get in touch and we’ll design something that works for you.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes. Foraging walks and herbal remedy workshops make lovely gifts. Get in touch and I can arrange a voucher for a specific event, or a flexible one the recipient can put towards any upcoming session.

What if the weather is bad?

Most walks go ahead in typical Cumbrian weather, light rain included, so just dress for it. I only cancel for genuine safety reasons, such as high winds, storms, or ice, and if that happens I’ll let you know as early as possible and offer a voucher or refund.
